Hi all,
Executive summary: Debian Etch and Ubuntu Breezy users on i386 can now
add Sinhala support with an
apt-get install sinhala-gnu-linux
When we started adding Sinhala to the GNU/Linux platform, it was a lot
of patching and re-compiling. One by one, our patches got into
mainstream, and we could get away with "upgrade-to-version-x-y-z"
instead of "apply-this-patch-and-re-compile". We were patiently
waiting for the day that we could "install" Sinhala support without
hand hacking.
And that day is now come.
I am starting with binaries for Debian and Ubuntu users. Building
RPMs will be the next step. Source code is always there in the CVS,
so anyone is welcome to make binaries.
Right now, i have built DEBs using pbuilder for Debian Etch and Ubuntu
Breezy. Depending on the feedback, i'll make DEBs available for other
platforms as well. Sanjaya is working to get DEBs for powerpc.
Important notes PLEASE READ:
- When Firefox is installed, it's a good idea to REPLACE config files
with the new ones than to keep the existing ones (default is to keep
the existing ones).
- Read the message you get while installing sinhala-locale-glibc.
- If you want to keep English menus, select another UTF-8 locale
(e.g.: en_US.UTF-8) and make it default (you will be prompted to do
this).
- KDE users can run "skim" and gnome users "scim". This should bring
a new icon on the system tray. Left click (not right click, but the
normal click) to get a list of languages. If it doesn't work, try to
restart KDE/GNOME OR try starting and app. It worked for me after a
couple of tries. (need to figure out the exact problem). But once
working, it will continue to work without problems.
