The series has a whole array of configurations and it's unlikely that
the whole series has a linux problem.

HP doesn't promote Microsoft, they just guarantee the software they've
tuned and tested for the hardware they sell. With acpi, the OEMs
decide how to manage the hardware and the operating system plays an
important role. So I'm not surprised if there are issues with Ubuntu.
On the other hand, linux kernel works well on most of the hp laptops
I've come across.

I suggest you first shrink the Vista partition and dual boot into
linux. The factory installed system contains important parameters
which may be useful to tune the linux system. Later on when things are
settled you could use the whole disk for linux.

Note that you should keep the recovery partition (or back it up). Your
warranty is usually void if you don't have the factory installed
system when you send for repairs.

Cheers,
~parthi
